Eternal Starling by Angela Corbett book blast

Synopsis
A love so strong, even eternity can’t separate them. Evie Starling has lived a relatively uneventful life hanging out with friends, gossiping about boys, and driving her 1966 Mustang.

All of that changes when she moves to Gunnison, Colorado, to start college and meets two mysterious men. For centuries, Alex Night and Emil Stone have yearned for Evie but they each have their own reasons for wanting to be with her. When both men claim to be her soul mate and tell her about an unbelievable past, Evie learns that she s not the person she thought she was. Soon, Evie finds herself in the middle of an age-old battle between the Amaranthine Society the soul protectors, and the Daevos Resistance the soul destroyers. With a past she doesn t understand, and a future rife with danger, Evie has to decide who she can trust. But Alex and Emil aren t the only ones who want Evie, and her soul is about to become the rope in an eternal tug-of-war.

Angela Corbett

As a child, Angela Corbett’s most prized possession was a set of read-along books. She used to follow along with the narrator on the stereo and dream of when she would be able to read by herself. Her childhood reading habit led her to consider her future career. However, after consulting with her parents, she realized she had already exceeded hobbit height and since fairies and dragonslayers were tricky jobs to get, she decided she wanted to create worlds of her own. She started writing poetry in elementary school and worked as a journalist in high school and college, but could never leave her love for writing fiction behind.

She is a graduate of Westminster College where she double majored in communication and sociology. She has worked as a journalist, freelance writer, and director of communications and marketing. She loves classic cars, traveling, and escaping in a good book. She lives in Utah with her incredibly supportive husband and their five-pound Pomeranian, Pippin, whose following of fangirls could rival Justin Bieber’s.

Eternal Starling is her debut novel and the first book in the Emblem of Eternity trilogy.

Love and other Demons - The Witching Pen Blog Tour PLUS GIVEAWAY

If you have not yet read The Witching Pen series, these posts may contain spoilers, as we are now on the last book!

With The Last Dragon released on 4th October, we’ve been having a little recap at everything that’s happened in this paranormal fantasy romance series so far.

Today I'm going to give you some insider info about the seven demon tribes and one of the things I had in mind when I created them. In the end, I never went in depth with this thought process in the series, because it would have taken the story in another direction too early on, and away from the Witching Pen and free will (which is what I really wanted to focus on).

Here's the history of the seven demon tribes in brief:

Lokoli – an angel who was demonised and cast out of Heaven, and then became known as the most bloodthirsty demon of all. She stole the Witching Pen from Heaven and created a new dimension she could rule over, as well as seven demon tribes:

The Lagool lived in water – oceans, rivers and swamps – and she gave them the gift of sight.
The Brujii lived in the forests and woods, and were given the gift of magic.
The Malattal lived under the ground, in caves, and held the gift of prophecy.
The Brokk inhabited the cold places of the north, and were given the gift of immortality.
The Totilemi were not limited to a region, but travelled the earth, and were given the gift of knowledge.
The Dessec inhabited the hot deserts, and were given the ability to bend time.
The Shanka, a type of succubi (and the males, incubi), were given the gift of creation itself – the power of life and death. But too afraid their power would be used against her, Lokoli banished them from the earth, forcing them to live ethereally, only able to enter this dimension through shadows and dreams. The Shanka did eventually kill Lokoli, but only after she awarded them with the Witching Pen. It became rightfully theirs, and to date, the Shanka and the angels are the only two races that can touch the Pen without it causing them damage.

When humans grew in numbers upon the earth, followed by the 'fallen', demons became outnumbered and shunned, and retreated into their own separate dimensions, all of which can be reached via portals, except for the Shanka's dimension which exists only in shadow.

And here's the thought process I decided not to write about: The seven demon tribes, subliminally, can also represent the seven deadly sins: a manifestation of Lokoli's banishment from Heaven. In turn, this would have given them an even stronger connection to humans in the reader's mind, and the ability to transcend (or master) “sin” is given another angle (particularly through the demons we get to know in this series) when the story is read as a whole in this way.

wrath - Dessec
greed - Malattal
sloth - Lagool
pride - Totilemi
lust - Shanka
envy - Brujii
gluttony - Brokk

As I said, in the end, if I had incorporated this, it would have taken two more books overall, I think(!), and I really wanted the series to focus on the aspect of the Pen and what it means. Nevertheless, the above was in my mind when I created the story and the seven demon tribes.

Irreplaceable by Angela Graham book blitz

 Irreplaceable by Angela Graham
Genre: Contemporary Romance/New Adult

Synopsis:

It wasn’t his fault she lay broken and battered. He wasn’t responsible for the injuries covering her bruised body.
Her heart, however, told a different story. She endured the pain of its jagged edges as it shattered against her chest, ripping through the hope she once held. Her spirit was broken, and only one man was to blame for that.
Cassandra Clarke had known better than to trust her all to a man like Logan West. She’d thought he was different—a better man than he’d portrayed to others. A man worth risking it all for.
But she was wrong, and would never make that mistake again.
What happens when you question everything you longed to believe—deny all emotions you still hold for a man unworthy of them?

Faced with Logan’s persistence, Cassandra must find the strength to keep her guard up or risk falling again for the one man her body feels…is irreplaceable.

Excerpt:
The walls surrounding my heart began to shudder and shake, and it took everything I had to keep it hidden.
"Mm-hmm," I replied, my lips clamped together tightly.
His pained eyes searched mine. "You have to give me something to hold onto, sweetheart…a reason to keep fighting when you repeatedly push me away."

I’m here! I wanted to shout out to the world. Wait for me, please, but I stood silent, terrified. How had I become so weak? Seeing him with that woman had pushed me over the edge. He’d want more than I could ever give him, so it was for the best if he walked away. Better to get out now before it was too late.

He nodded after a long, silent pause.

I hated him for bringing me so low, for creating a storm of brewing rage deep in my soul. I hated myself for wanting to take him in my arms and kiss him until I forgot. I had to fight through it to find a way to get him off my porch.
Finally, I opened my mouth and swallowed the rough lump that had formed, speaking in a soft voice. "I was about to take a shower, and though you seem to think that’s our new thing, I prefer to do it alone. Goodbye."

Fifteen-year-old Callum Roe and his younger brother, James, were captured and forced to convert six years ago. Cal has been working in the Path's dog kennels, and is very close to becoming one of the Path's deadliest secret agents. Then Cal befriends a stray dog named Bear and kills a commander who wants to train him to be a vicious attack dog. This sends Cal and Bear on the run, and sets in motion a series of incredible events that will test Cal's loyalties and end in a fierce battle that the fate of the entire country rests on.

My Review

Thank you to book nerd tours and the author for providing me with a copy in exchange for a honest review.

I signed up to review this book cus it sounded completely different to what I normally read and I like to expand my reading horizons,
I really enjoyed the writing style of this book, made it really easy to get into.  I didn’t really connect with the main character Cal, but that didn’t stop me from finishing the book.  I liked how the author knew all the military terms and how he wrote the battle bits of the book.  Some parts had my heart in my mouth wondering who was going to survive and who was going to die.

I don’t know if this book is a stand alone, im thinking not with the ending, and if it is then im not exactly happy, as there are way to many unanswered question for there not to be a second book.

The character cal, was just ok for me, he wasn’t anything special. He killed a person since he was going to kill and dog named bear, and that’s how they go on the run, along the way they meet a lot of other characters, some survive and some don’t.
His brother james was a surprise, hes well and truly been corrupted by the path, which for me is nothing but a Cult with a lot of fire power. Its something that has some truth to it and could easily happen in reality if we are not careful.

This book I recommend to everyone who likes war books, military book etc.
While this wasn’t for me, I did enjoy the writing style. It was the characters that didn’t grab me.

3.5 stars

Here are some things about me.

I live in an extremely Brazilian section of an extremely Greek neighborhood—Astoria, Queens, which is just to the right of Manhattan. (That's as you face Manhattan. If you were, say, lying on your back in the middle of Central Park with your head in a northerly position, we would be to your left) I live there with my wife who has a blog and our two cats who do not. One day I hope to have a very large dog that I can name Jerry Lee Lewis.

I used to write plays (I actually have an MFA in it, which is currently number 8 on US News and World Report's annual list of the top twenty most useless masters degrees) and now I write books for teens. I've written two. One was about a girl who wanted to be a rock star and could graciously be called a learning experience.

Antigoddess by Kendare Blake

Synopsis
The Goddess War begins in Antigoddess, the first installment of the new series by acclaimed author of Anna Dressed in Blood, Kendare Blake.

Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

Kendare Blake is an import from South Korea who was raised in the United States by caucasian parents. You know, that old chestnut. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Ithaca College and a Master’s degree in Writing from Middlesex University in London. She brakes for animals, the largest of which was a deer, which sadly didn’t make it, and the smallest of which was a mouse, which did, but it took forever. Amongst her likes are Greek Mythology, rare red meat and veganism. She also enjoys girls who can think with the boys like Ayn Rand, and boys who scare the morality into people, like Bret Easton Ellis.

Excerpt:
The car horn sounded like a trumpet, making me laugh hysterically. Hugh was anything but subtle. Jamming my feet into my Converse shoes, I tie the laces in a hurry and rush for the door.
"Where are you going?"
My mother, one of the shortest people I know, tries to block my way. I gently nudge her aside as I zip up my hoody. "I'm going out," I mumble.
"No you're not. It's Friday night. You have youth group. Your father is expecting to see you there."
"Well he's going to be disappointed...again. How many times do I have to tell you guys I'm not interested? I don't want to sound snarky, but I can't help it. I hate youth group. I hate church. I hate that my minister is my dad who is constantly harping on about it and forcing me to go to stuff that is as boring as hell. It's bad enough they force me to the Sunday morning snore-fest each week. I decided a few months ago, that my parents could stop stealing my Friday nights as well. I used to sneak out after youth group all the time, but it was getting tiring. The last few months of just skipping it have been much easier, although I could do without the arguments.”
"Dale, stop."
I don't bother holding in my sigh as I pause by the front door. My mother's voice, usually so soft and sweet has taken on a hard edge. It's been doing that a lot lately.
"You know the rules."
Do I ever!
"You must attend youth group. How do you think it looks to the parishioners when their own minister's son doesn't even show up?"
"I don't care how it looks." I spin around to face her. "I don't care what any of those people think. I'm not here to impress them. I never asked to be a minister's kid."
"Dale…"
"No! I'm going out."
Her expression crests with sadness before bunching into a tight frown.
I race out the door before she can stop me. Her voice chases me down the path all the way to Hugh's car. I slam the door shut, trying to block out the, "Dale, you get back here right now!"
"Go, man, go!"
Hugh nods and screeches away from the curb, but not fast enough for me to miss the tears welling in my mother's eyes. I shouldn't have looked back.
I hate that. Why does she have to go crying about it and making me feel bad? Maybe if her and Dad would stop lumping so many rules on me, and actually listen to what I had to say, I wouldn't have to cause her so much pain. This had been brewing for years, mostly without me knowing it, but at the end of my freshman year I just snapped. I couldn't play the role anymore. I refused to keep following the rules I thought were stupid. They weren't doing it because they loved me, they were just worried about what the damn church goers thought. It was all about appearances to them. I refused to follow some religion I wasn't even sure I believed in. Hypocrites were the worst kind of sinners, and I wasn't going to be lumped in with them.
No, I had chosen to swing to the complete opposite side of the spectrum. Having spent a lifetime living by the letter of the law, I was now doing my best to live as far from the law as possible.
