I am not a fan of spiders in fact, they scare the hell out of me. It's an ongoing joke in my house that I would throw a match at my house to kill a spider rather than get near one. So, I was totally unsure and a little apprehensive about reading this book at all.
That being said, going into the book was a little overwhelming at first. There was a lot of worldbuilding happening right away, and I felt a bit out of my depth with so much thrown at me at once. But I think around the 10% mark, I found my footing and from there, I was sailing.
I really enjoyed the story and the interactions between Ivy and Ketahn, and seeing this world unfold I all but ate it up. I also hated the queen with a fiery passion that had me grinding my teeth and silently wishing she'd fall into a death pit. But honestly, it all worked to make the book that much better.
There were moments I was holding my breath and groaning, and others times where It was just the MML and FML, and i was completely giddy, biting my lip, and full of hope.
I’d say the spice isn’t the main focus, but there’s a steady undercurrent of tension throughout the book. The real spice hits around the 80% mark, and while it doesn’t overwhelm the story, it’s definitely not lacking or short.
Overall, I really liked the book and would absolutely read it again. I’m planning on diving into the second book soon though I’m a little worried about what’s coming next.
Totally surprised and super pleased with this one! 🕷️ (even with the spiders... shudders)
