(Braided Fate, #2) Captive Traitor King by Brigid Kemmerer ARC Review

Captive Traitor King (Braided Fate, #2)Captive Traitor King by Brigid Kemmerer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars (But I would give it more if I could!)
🌶️🌶️ 2 Spice (Close to 3!)

There are no words that can express how excited I was to get an ARC of this book. I have read the first book twice, and it was one of the few books I have given 6 stars EVER, and I loved it just as much on the second read. I have also got like three copies of the first book, just to give you an idea of how much of a fan I am of the book. So when I got book 2, I all but wanted to sob, and there was a little happy dance that followed as I hugged my Kindle. My dog was super confused. I also reread the first book to make sure I was going into book two with my mind fresh with the story and excited to jump into the book.

Before I forget, thank you so much to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction for providing me with an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and given honestly. Now let's get into it.

I did not think there was any chance of me liking this one as much as the first, but I so did. The book starts pretty much from where the first book ended, and I was so glad for that. While I did read the first book to refresh, I found that the author had started the book in a way that gave you a refresher itself, so I was feeling on top form.

The book eases into what is currently going on in the story and how our 3 leads are all dealing with each other. There are bumps and hurdles and, of course, problems, but I do love how they don't just let things linger. They all seem set to try and fix things when they know they did wrong, and I find that super appealing in a book when a lot of books draw out strife and miscommunication, and I hate it, but this book does not do that.

The story is always the main focus in this book, which is great when you have romance and spice to boot in the book. I love the direction the story is moving in. The clear ups and downs and shocking revelations and information I was getting throughout this book were top tier, and I feel fit to burst from the story, but this book had so much more than just a deep story.

One of the things I love best about this book and the series so far is the complex characters, not just our 3 leads, but slowly in the book you get to see more of others as well and get to feel them more as people. But keeping my eyes on our leads, Jory, Asher and Ky, all three have very different lives, different hardships, but it's the details of trauma and how each of them deals with that.

Their pain felt so on point and gripping that it hurt in a way that had me so lost in the pages that I could almost forget everything else outside of the book. I loved how each of them dealt with things differently, how they are trying to overcome things, and it just OOZES emotion on a whole different level than other books. There were moments in this book that had me hurting so bad I thought I would break too, and there were moments I smiled so hard it hurt, and the fact the book just evoked that sort of feeling from me makes it a brilliant read.

The spice in this book was much more than the first book, but it never overshadowed the story, never felt out of place and never once felt unneeded. I loved the spice and the relationships. I feel like each of them gets something from each other that is different, and I hope to see more of this in the next book.

The book has a great pace; I never felt rushed, but things moved well, and I never got bored or felt like this bit was filler. No, everything felt like it had a place. The book gives you room to breathe and start making up your own thoughts on things before some stuff becomes known, and there are moments of action and gore along with sweeter moments, and overall, it had everything I wanted.

But that ENDING.

The author drop-kicked my heart right out of my chest, I swear it. How am I going to live without the next book? How am I going to be able to move on and wait? It's like an impossible ask. It was a shocking end and one that will keep me awake at night and worrying, but I hope the author will not make me wait too long.
